The next morning, we had campfire cheesy eggs and coffee for breakfast!! We had survived a freezing cold and wet night and it was amazing to have hot food and drinks.
Our friends, Layne and Matt, live in the south and while they were visiting us here in Wyoming we wanted to take them up to our favorite camping spot in the Bighorn Mountains! Chris grew up with his family camping at Deer Haven in the Bighorn National Forest so when we camp he takes us back there. We were all really excited and expected clear weather. Unfortunately for us, as soon as our tent was put up it started hailing and turned into freezing rain. Joy!!! While waiting out the hail and rain in the tent, Chris and Matt noticed a lake of water forming in front of it. They took it upon their manly selves to drain it by digging a trench to lower ground. We sure were thankful! After the rain stopped we set up camp and roasted brats and hot dogs over the fire. The next morning, we had campfire cheesy eggs and coffee for breakfast!! We had survived a freezing cold and wet night and it was amazing to have hot food and drinks. I put together this inexpensive outhouse bucket for us to use! I found this shower caddy for $3.00 at Target and included extra toilet paper, wipes, hand sanitizer, Febreeze spray and a flashlight. It really came in handy and I will never camp without it again! We spent all morning around the campfire warming up. We didn't bring enough sweatshirts for everyone so we had to buy a few at Deer Haven lodge. Sometime between breakfast and lunch we decided it was a good time to eat smores! I found some square shaped marshmallows and I swear by them now. They work PERFECTLY for smores. Putting together a smores box helped keep everything nice and neat in one place. I'm so glad I did it and will be another one of our camping must-haves. Chris made us insanely good burgers and grilled corn on the cob for lunch! Have I mentioned how lucky we are? After lunch, Chris, Ebin and I explored the river next to our camp site. It was so gorgeous! Not long after our adventures those dark clouds brought freezing rain again and we were stuck in the tent for over 3 hours waiting it out. We played chess and took naps. Eventually we started getting hungry but because of the rain we weren't able to cook the steaks and potatoes we brought. By the time we could get the fire going again it was late so we just roasted more hot dogs and went to bed, cold and wet! We woke up to a beautiful sunny day but we were all so done with camping in the rain that we got everything packed up and ready to go by 9:30 am. We explored a lake and then headed down the mountain... a little bit away from our camping site we spotted a few moose through the trees. I wasn't able to get my camera out in time but Layne snapped this shot of one of the moose with her phone! We plan on going camping again in August with Chris' parents. Hopefully it won't rain!
Leading up to Valentine's Day, I was sick and then Rhiannon got sick. Today Ebin is sick - so we are just all not feeling too great. That was no excuse to skimp on Valentine's Day festivities, though, especially with my mother-in-law coming for a visit! I worked on a few Valentine's Day projects this past week:
I had some other things planned but that's about all I had energy for considering I am sick - good thing we have several more years for me to execute some other ideas of mine! Ebin came home from school on Friday with an unsigned crush-gram from school. UNSIGNED. That's right - Ebin has a secret admirer and he is beside himself trying to figure out who it is. 7th Grade is just so much fun! I sent Chris to work that day with a Valentine themed sack lunch, heart napkin and all! When Chris came home that night, he brought in a gorgeous arrangement of lavender and white flowers. He actually put all of that together at the flower shop and they turned out stunning. Our cat, Willoughby also loves them and even snuck in a few nibbles - he is no longer allowed near the flowers! On Valentine's Day we opened the See's Candy my parents had sent us - We love See's Candy! Thanks Grandpa Mike and Grandma Page! When Grandma Cindy arrived we had peanut butter and jam sandwiches in... you guessed it... the shape of hearts! They were delicious! That night we played games and even had a puppet show! Chris treated us to an amazing steak and parmesan roasted potato dinner, starting out with feta cheese and ham stuffed mushrooms as appetizers. I will never get tired of his cooking! After dinner it was time for our Valentine Exchange!! We started a new tradition this year that I absolutely LOVED! We each wrote letters to each other explaining why we love one another. Totally worth it to see our kids light up and see them grinning from ear to ear. I think it is so important for kids to see in writing how much their parents love them and to get letters of encouragement from time to time. If you haven't done this with your own kids yet, I suggest doing it. It brings you together more than you think it would and doesn't really take much effort. I just put up bags with everyone's name on it and each member of the family wrote their own letters then got to "deliver" them into the corresponding bags. When we were finished with the mushy stuff we melted some white chocolate and dipped pretzels and pink wafers! We still have a bunch of them saved for when everyone is feeling better - that will be nice for some sweet treats! The last thing of the night was to give Chris his Valentine's Day gift: A bottle of Seagram's Dark Honey Whiskey! I found a cute tag that reads " You Whisk Me Off My Feet" on Pizzazzerie. Get your FREE printable here. We had a great Valentine's Day despite everyone in the house getting sick this week. Even if we feel run down and tired - we know how much we are loved! Happy Valentine's Day! |
