My brother Sean came to visit and brought his wife, Cory, and darling daughter, Emmy, for Mom's birthday this month. We had some fun days together before their short trip ended and hopefully Mom had a wonderful birthday surrounded by family. We played games and even had a dance party! Emmy is so much fun. Rhiannon and I read to her on Grandma's bed. Even with all the fun to be had, we made time for some family photos in front of our parent's home. We had such a nice time all together as a family. Hoping we can do this again sometime soon! Happy Birthday, Mom!
Our friends, Layne and Matt, live in the south and while they were visiting us here in Wyoming we wanted to take them up to our favorite camping spot in the Bighorn Mountains! Chris grew up with his family camping at Deer Haven in the Bighorn National Forest so when we camp he takes us back there. We were all really excited and expected clear weather. Unfortunately for us, as soon as our tent was put up it started hailing and turned into freezing rain. Joy!!! While waiting out the hail and rain in the tent, Chris and Matt noticed a lake of water forming in front of it. They took it upon their manly selves to drain it by digging a trench to lower ground. We sure were thankful! After the rain stopped we set up camp and roasted brats and hot dogs over the fire. The next morning, we had campfire cheesy eggs and coffee for breakfast!! We had survived a freezing cold and wet night and it was amazing to have hot food and drinks. I put together this inexpensive outhouse bucket for us to use! I found this shower caddy for $3.00 at Target and included extra toilet paper, wipes, hand sanitizer, Febreeze spray and a flashlight. It really came in handy and I will never camp without it again! We spent all morning around the campfire warming up. We didn't bring enough sweatshirts for everyone so we had to buy a few at Deer Haven lodge. Sometime between breakfast and lunch we decided it was a good time to eat smores! I found some square shaped marshmallows and I swear by them now. They work PERFECTLY for smores. Putting together a smores box helped keep everything nice and neat in one place. I'm so glad I did it and will be another one of our camping must-haves. Chris made us insanely good burgers and grilled corn on the cob for lunch! Have I mentioned how lucky we are? After lunch, Chris, Ebin and I explored the river next to our camp site. It was so gorgeous! Not long after our adventures those dark clouds brought freezing rain again and we were stuck in the tent for over 3 hours waiting it out. We played chess and took naps. Eventually we started getting hungry but because of the rain we weren't able to cook the steaks and potatoes we brought. By the time we could get the fire going again it was late so we just roasted more hot dogs and went to bed, cold and wet! We woke up to a beautiful sunny day but we were all so done with camping in the rain that we got everything packed up and ready to go by 9:30 am. We explored a lake and then headed down the mountain... a little bit away from our camping site we spotted a few moose through the trees. I wasn't able to get my camera out in time but Layne snapped this shot of one of the moose with her phone! We plan on going camping again in August with Chris' parents. Hopefully it won't rain!
